First Night Columbus brings family friendly New Year’s Eve fun to downtown

Local News

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — New Year’s Eve is here. If you’re looking for something family friendly to do, First Night Columbus is underway.

It’s a dry event that’s fun for all ages sponsored by NBC4. A ticket will cost you $15 dollars but will get you into 3 events.

You can buy your tickets right at the door here at COSI. Everything kicks off at 5:30. The best part about first night Columbus? The events are for all ages and centered around family.

Megan Lemmon, a mother at COSI with her daughter says, “I think it’s a really great option you know. We usually just end up at somebody’s house because it’s one of the only places we can be with our kids. But it’s really great to have an option to be able to be out and celebrate, enjoy fireworks and stay with the kids.”

Co-executive director for first night Columbus Shawn Verhoff says First Night Columbus is about creating a safe environment for everyone.

“It’s creating an environment for families to enjoy New Year’s Eve. You know New Year’s Eve always has a certain connotation and this is really family. It’s fun and it’s substance free. This is one of the most fun events that Columbus really has to offer. Very few times do you get to go to multiple locations,” said Verhoff.

And of course, you can’t forget the fireworks that will go off at midnight!

Earl Burke who’s the fireworks site manager for First Night Columbus said, “About a 10-minute show. Just long enough to get everyone pumped excited for a brand new year. A lot of great color in the sky and a lot of noise so it’ll bring ring in the new year.”

That 10-minute fireworks show is happening right outside of COSI along the riverfront.
