EAST LIBERTY, Ohio (WCMH) – Unusually warm weather this season has fewer people hitting the slopes at Mad River Mountain.
Management says attendance is down about 10 to 20 percent. Josh Faber, the general manager of Mad River Mountain said the weather is confusing people.
“We actually still have a lot of snow, and there is no snow in the cities,” said Faber.
Faber said Mad River uses man-made snow to keep the slopes covered for skiers during warm temperatures.
“We need some cold temperatures. Luckily we made a lot of snow when we were able to,” said Faber.
Chris Harper said he’d much rather ski on the real snow, but this beats being at work any day.
“This stuff has been frozen and thawed. It’s been through cycles. It’s not fresh snow. It’s kinda granular,” said Harper.
However, Faber sees some benefits in using man-made snow.
“Man-made snow is much more durable. So, it doesn’t melt as quickly as natural snow. So, it lasts a lot longer for us which is wonderful, said Faber.
Faber said it’s still early in the season, so folks wanting to come out still have plenty of time.
