COLUMBUS (WCMH) –Columbus Crew SC hosts the New York Red Bulls for its 2019 MLS regular-season Opening Match at MAPFRE Stadium on Saturday, March 2 at 4:30 p.m. ET
The team held training on Tuesday as they prepare for the season opener. The game kicks off a new era of soccer in Columbus, a franchise under new ownership and directed by new head coach Caleb Porter.
“It’s a momentous game, it really is. It’s the dawning of a new era for our club, for our city, and for a new coaching staff as well, so the excitement will be there like I said, the emotion will be there, of course, but for us, it’s taming that down so we can perform at a high level,” said team captain Wil Trapp.
Porter has been pleased with his team’s performance during preseason games.
“We looked like the team I’d hoped we’d be, we’re still a long way off of where we can be, which is really a positive because that last game was I think pretty good,” said Porter.
The players say it has been a smooth transition under the new coaching staff. “The concepts and the principles he wants to reinforce in us…have his team show, are very similar to what we’re accustomed to. Yes there’s subtle tweaks of course, but it’s really been about him getting to know us and us getting to know him,” said Trapp.
“We’re all just excited to be together another year, a good amount of us, and now we just look forward to the challenge this weekend,’ said Gyasi Zardes.
Tuesday evening, the team is hosting a 2019 season kickoff party at The Bluestone at 6 p.m. The event is a private event for season ticket holders.
Wednesday, the team will operate a pop-up shop at the Ohio Union from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The Crew will also host its media day Wednesday afternoon at Eakin Elementary School.
The Crew will appear at the North Market Thursday and Friday at 11:30 a.m. along with a pop-up shop.
Friday, the Crew is encouraging supporters to wear Crew SC apparel for ‘Black and Gold Friday.’ The team is encouraging fans to attend the Crewsmas Eve party at various supporter bars throughout Columbus.
