Coroner: Kirkersville police chief died of fentanyl overdose

KIRKERSVILLE, OH (WCMH) – Kirkersville Police Chief James Hughes Jr. died of an accidental fentanyl overdose, according to an autopsy report.

The reports released Friday lists Hughes’ cause of death as acute intoxication by fentanyl.

Hughes was found dead in his Reynoldsburg home in May, just months after becoming the head of the Kirkersville Police Department.

Tests of two syringes in Hughes’ home tested positive for fentanyl. Residue from cocaine was found in a plastic sandwich bag.

Hughes assumed the position of Kirkersville Police Chief in March 2018 after Jeff Finley resigned from the post, citing a hostile work environment.

This is the second police chief Kirkersville has lost in the last year and a half. In May 2017, Chief Steven Eric DiSario was shot and killed in the line of duty during a hostage situation near the Pine Kirk Care Center.
