“CommUNITY unity” mural dedication ceremony held in Bucyrus

Local News
A dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Thursday, October 11 at the Community Unity mural in Bucyrus.

The Mayor recognized the schools, the civic groups and the artists who made this mural come to life.
Ohio House of Representative Riordan McClain was on hand to celebrate the accomplishment as well.

The mural depicts the mascot of the city’s annual fall festival, the Bratwurst Festival, along with a logo of the city’s upcoming 2021 bicentennial. On the opposite side are mascots of Bucyrus’s three nearby school districts: the Bucyrus Redmen, the Wynford Royals, and the Colonel Crawford Eagles.

The three schools in Bucyrus are cross-town rivals, but the mural at the corner of Hopley and Walnut gives each school equal weight by combining their mascots’ logos plus the city’s Bratwurst Festival mascot and the bi-centennial logo.

“We not only get to work within the community,” says Mike Striker, Art Teacher. “We also have students who are helping out with creating a mural that is going up and hopefully future generations get to see it.”

The students and their art teachers volunteered countless hours this summer to give the building a makeover, with financial help from the local Lions, Kiwanis, and Rotary clubs.

“It’s nice to see those three separate communities come together in a mural, reminding people we are one bigger community,” said Zac Bauer, Art Teacher. “Not one entity is bigger than the other.”

Striker rejoined: “So the big message is just, we’re a great community and we’re sort of unifying everything with a big, bold message that says we’re proud.”

With schools this close together, there are bound to be rivalries. “Competition against each other is very strong and stuff, but I do know in times of need we are there for each other,” Bucyrus High School student Alexis Pival said.

Striker sees it as a lasting legacy. “Now we actually get to sort of unify all the schools that touch our city limits and be able to come together and create something that’s going to last.”
