Community split about hosting Pres. Trump at Olentangy Orange High School

Local News

A change of venue has moved President Donald Trump’s rally for Troy Balderson to Olentangy Orange High School.

The rally was originally set to happen at the Delaware County Fairgrounds but the venue size was an issue.

According to the general manager of the Delaware County Fairground, Trump’s event organizer wanted a venue that could hold 2,500 people. Theirs could only hold 1,500.

Now Lewis Center community members, like James Brady, are sounding off about how they feel about the high school hosting the event.

“What angers me about this happening though is the kind of behavior that’s going to go and going to be attracted,” said Brady.

Brady believes Trump’s divisiveness will send the wrong message to this community and the kids.

He points to this school rock that’s been tagged with pro-Trump messages with phrases like “Stop Fake News” and “Make American Great Again.”

School officials had to paint over the messages two times Friday.

Olentangy Orange sent a statement saying it does not support or endorse any political candidate or party.

Brady feels they are walking a very fine line.

“What worries me and concerns me deeply as an educator myself and having kids in this district is that Olentangy is giving the green light to this kind of behavior,” said Brady. “I just don’t see this being something… something good for our community.”

Audrey McHenry does not feel the same.

“I think it’s exciting to have a sitting president in Olentangy High School,” said McHenry.

She adds added she was surprised at how angry people are. She believes this is an exciting moment for this community and its students, and her son, Sean, agreed.

“I think it’s pretty exciting,” said Sean. “It’s a once in a lifetime event.”

The school is doing its best to keep this rock clear of any political statement. They do not want to seem as if they support any candidate.
