Community remembers local Pearl Harbor survivor

COLUMBUS (WCMH) –  A community remembers a Pearl Harbor survivor, and a WW2 veteran.  Family members held services for 97-year-old Milton Mapou. He passed away last Thursday.

Mapou in the past talked with NBC4 about how he narrowly escaped the attack back in 1941.  His grandson, Ken Branscome, remembers him as a hero.

“This is the toughest guy that ever lived. I swear to god. He’s just amazing,” said Branscome.

Just last month, Mapou took a trip back to Pearl Harbor.  That would be his last trip.

His family says the 97-year-old got sick with pneumonia and died shortly after.
