A child’s death has a community heartbroken following a car crash on the city’s north side. It happened around 5:30 p.m. on 12th and Cleveland avenues.
Jazmine Smith said she saw it all.
“That’s messed up. That’s so messed. Because it’s from me seeing it. I never seen nothing like that before,” said Smith.
Police said they transferred three children and one adult to the hospital after an SUV flipped over after crashing into a car.
“As the car was like flipping. You um, you seen the kids. They was like tumbling,” said Smith.
She ran over to help as she just happened to be passing by.
“It was so loud. All you seen was like dust. It was like smoke everywhere,” said Smith.
Through that dark plume, Smith said she eventually saw the driver of the SUV. She said she jumped in to help a child that was still stuck inside as the driver grabbed another child.
“He grabbed the little girl and her face was gone, and she was lifeless, and he stood there,” Smith sobbed.
Smith is finding it hard to cope. She wishes she could have done more.
Authorities haven’t yet released the name of the 7-year-old child who died.
Police have not released the names of the driver of the vehicle and the other children injured in the crash.
