COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — One person is dead after being shot Monday afternoon in east Columbus.

A police dispatcher said officers were dispatched to the 100 block of South Hampton Road at 12:26 p.m. and found one person with a gunshot wound. The victim, identified as Saadiq J. Teague, 20, was pronounced dead at 12:33 p.m.

“Yelling and screaming and shooting and shooting,” said one neighbor who asked to remain anonymous. “And before you know it, a kid is dead.

A shooting scene on South Hampton Road was something too common for this man, who said usually when he hears gunshots while at home now, he doesn’t think much of it.

“It’s just too common right now and it’s not adults anymore; it’s kids,” he said.

He said when he heard five, then 10, then at least 15 pops, he knew it was different this time.

“At first I thought it was fireworks and stuff like that, but then I realized it wasn’t anymore,” he said.

The shooting happened in an alleyway, in his backyard, so he is taped into his home from his back door.

“I was in my kitchen about to open my door, then I realized this happened right in my backyard,” he said. “I was in the pathway. That could’ve been me.”

He is afraid to walk near his windows and around his neighborhood because he never knows when there will be gunfire.

“You’re not safe anywhere,” he said. “I think these complexes need security guard patrol or whatever it is because residents have to stay safe.”
