COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Two people are dead Friday after a vehicle with stolen goods inside crashed into a pole after it sped away from a Hilliard police officer.
Hilliard police say that at 2:51 a.m. an officer saw a lime green SUV, later learned to have three people inside, in the 3600 block of Fishinger Road before pulling the car over. Dash cam footage shows the SUV stop as the cruiser approaches and comes to a halt. Shortly after the cruiser stopped, the SUV took off at a “high-rate of speed,”, per the officer following the vehicle.
Police said the officer did not pursue the car at a high speed, keeping a distance while driving east on Fishinger Road. One minute later, the officer saw the car crash into a pole. Medics arrived and pronounced one person dead at the scene and another was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition. Police say that person was pronounced dead at Riverside.
Dash cam video released from the Hilliard Division of Police can be seen below.
Four minutes after the crash, another Hilliard officer responded to a burglary alarm going off at a gas station on Cemetary Road. The officer saw the front glass door was shattered and found several cases of cigarettes stolen.
Hilliard police reported that cigarette cases matching the description of those stolen were found in the crashed vehicle.
Columbus and Hilliard police continue to investigate the crash along with the breaking and entering.
