COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – One person is dead after a stabbing Tuesday morning on the Southeast Side, and a man has been arrested in a northwest suburb.

Columbus police responded to reports of a stabbing at about 6 a.m. in the 1400 block of Berkeley Road, in the Deshler Park neighborhood. The victim, identified as 29-year-old Shannon Hiott, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:18 a.m.

Police have not said what led to the incident but confirmed that one person, later identified as 26-year-old Chance Donohoe, was arrested less than an hour later at a Sheetz in Powell on Seldom Seen Road. A Columbus sergeant at the scene originally reported that Donohoe called 911 from the gas station and said he had killed his wife.

Police are still working to confirm whether Hiott and Donohoe were married. If they were, this would be the 18th domestic violence homicide in Columbus so far in 2023.

Donohoe has been charged with murder and was taken to Franklin County Jail.

Powell police said their officers assisted in the investigation after Donahoe called 911 from a relative’s home in Powell. He then left that residence and was found at the Sheetz in Liberty Township. Powell PD detained the suspect until Columbus PD arrived and took him into custody without incident.

Mary O’Doherty, the executive director of the Ohio Domestic Violence Network, said one in three women are victims of domestic violence.

“If one in three survivors is dealing with domestic violence and we see that the prevalence is so great, it’s sad, but probably not surprising that so many end up homicides,” O’Doherty said.

Domestic violence is a big problem in Ohio, but O’Doherty said many people don’t feel like they can get away from their abusers.

“If you have children and you are dependent on the person who hit you, the perpetrator, financially, if your children are dependent, then it’s not that easy just to leave,” she said.

The Ohio Domestic Violence Network has 76 programs for survivors, with 58 of them being shelters where people can stay to be away from an abuser.

Donohoe is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning.

Update: CPD confirmed Wednesday morning that Donohoe said he killed his girlfriend.
