COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A man has been hospitalized and another has been arrested after a shooting overnight Monday in the Short North Arts District just north of downtown Columbus.
According to Columbus police, a 36-year-old man was shot in the chest twice at a parking lot across from Skully’s Music Diner on North High Street at around 2:15 a.m. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and is in critical condition.
In a 7 a.m. update, police said the man was shot by 22-year-old Jealon Brown who was arrested and charged with felonious assault. Brown is scheduled to appear in Municipal Court Tuesday morning.
Police added that Brown and the victim had a disagreement before the shooting took place.

North High Street between West Fourth and West Fifth avenues reopened around 6 a.m. after being closed for several hours.
Next to the parking lot where the shooting occurred is Stonewall Columbus. Its Executive Director, Denzel Porteous, said violence incidents near the LGBTQ+ community center is not uncommon — since he’s been there, there’s been about one shooting a year nearby.
It’s not abnormal for the history of the Short North — now bustling with high-end boutiques, bars and clubs, the neighborhood of a few decades ago was less trendy, and violent crime was more common. Still, Porteous said he believes the Short North has come a long way from what it used to be, and he cautioned against people taking violent incidents out of context.
“I believe there’d be no reason for anyone to write off the area or think ill of the Short North and what’s been happening here,” Porteous said. “I think it is and continues to be a welcoming community.”
