COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Two people are dead and one person is injured after two separate shootings Sunday afternoon in east Columbus, with the locations of the shootings within 0.2 miles of each other.
According to a police dispatcher, officers were called to the 1400 block of East Mound Street at 12:35 p.m. after reports of a shooting. A man was found with a gunshot wound and was taken to Grant Medical Center in a life-threatening condition.
A second victim walked in to Ohio State University East Hospital in critical condition with a police dispatcher confirming both victims were pronounced dead after 1 p.m.
An officer at the scene said several people including children were being detained, with the children being interviewed about the shooting, with the officer adding there does not appear to be an ongoing threat to the community.
Columbus police said the preliminary investigation shows an argument involving the two victims happened before the shooting.
Police have not released the identity of either victim.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Columbus Police Det. Poliseno at 614-645-6420 or the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730.
Around one hour after the initial call for the shooting on East Mound Street, officers investigating that scene heard shots fired nearby, according to a police dispatcher.
A resident of the area said the shooting is something she’s not used to seeing.
“I wouldn’t say that it’s super, super shocking for the area, but it is for me,” resident Katelin Martin said. “Having lived here for a year and a half and only seeing, like really, one incident, to have a double shooting on the same day, it does make me feel, like, a little more unsafe and that makes sense.”
This second shooting occurred at approximately 1:37 p.m. at the intersection of East Fulton Street and Kelton Avenue, a five-minute walk from the area of the first shooting.
A dispatcher said one victim was found with a gunshot wound to the leg and taken to Grant Medical Center in stable condition at 1:50 p.m.
Police at the scene of the East Fulton Street incident said some kind of disturbance led to the shooting and that a 39-year-old man is the suspect in the shooting.
An officer at the scene said the shootings are unrelated.
