Teenage girl arrested in fatal shooting of 17-year-old, Columbus police say

Columbus

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Columbus police have arrested a 16-year-old girl accused of fatally shooting another teenager.

Police said Tuesday morning that the girl was arrested without incident by SWAT unit officers. She is expected to be charged in the death of 17-year-old Jayce O’Neal.

Police say that at about 7:30 p.m. Monday, officers were called to the 1800 block of Ridgebury Drive on the report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found O’Neal suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to Doctor’s West Hospital, where she later died.

Police say O’Neal and the 16-year-old were fighting, when the 16-year-old pulled a gun and shot O’Neal. After the shooting, the 16-year-old drove away from the scene. Police issued a description of the car as they attempted for hours to locate her. The car has also since been recovered.

O’Neal is the seventh victim between the ages of 13 and 17 to die due to violence in Columbus this year and the 19th female, Sgt. James Fuqua said.

“Growing up, this wasn’t something that people were accustomed to,” Fuqua said. “But young people are so quick to pick up guns, and I’m not really sure what the solution is or why they think that is appropriate to do, but we’ve got to figure out a way to put a handle on it.”

Fuqua described the neighborhood where the shooting took place as quiet, saying police don’t often get calls from there.
