COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A man suspected of murdering two others is dead after being shot Tuesday night by a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy at a gas station on the Northeast Side.

According to the sheriff’s office, the shooting involved a suspect wanted in connection with a double homicide on May 31 and happened at a gas station near Stelzer and Agler roads just after 7 p.m.

The sheriff’s office said SWAT deputies were conducting surveillance on the suspect when an officer-in-trouble call was issued and shots were fired. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:14 p.m.

The sheriff’s office said the man was a suspect in a shooting on West Broad Street near I-270 where a man driving a car was shot and killed. The car crashed into a concrete barrier, and a female passenger later died as well.

Deputies recovered a weapon from the suspect, the sheriff’s office said.

No deputies were injured.

“The members of the FOP, they go out every day and they have a simple job, right?” said Brian Steel, executive vice president of the local lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, who went to the scene. “They have an important job: It’s to keep the streets safe and go after individuals.

“I’m sorry the guy lost his life. I’m sure he has family. I pray for that family. Our deputies are going home, and that’s number one for us.”

There was tension between community members and law enforcement at the scene, with some residents trying to cross over the crime scene tape that surrounded the entire intersection.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation will investigate.
