Columbus State aviation program honors fallen Columbus, Westerville officers

Local News

COLUMBUS (WCMH)- Columbus State Community College honored Westerville officers Anthony Morelli and Eric Joering, and Columbus Police officer Steve Smith.

The college’s aviation program placed badge insignias on its training plane.

Organizers with Columbus State Community College’s aviation program placed three badges on its training plane.  Jeff Gruber with the college helped organize the memorial.

“We decided to honor the officers who were trained out here, a part of our family. We put a memorial on our aircraft to keep them in our hearts and prayers,” said Gruber.

Both officer Smith and Joering trained on this plane years ago. Columbus Police chief Kim Jacobs thinks about them all the time.

“This is a very nice honor and makes sure we don’t forget their names and what they sacrificed,” said Jacobs.

Westerville police chief Joseph Morbitzer said the badges turned out nice and he is glad it’s there to remind people to never forget.

“Out of tragic circumstances come great things. We can’t be thankful enough to the facility at Columbus State for what they have done to memorialize three true American heroes,” said Morbitzer.
