COLUMBUS (WCMH) – Just 14 minutes into the new year, Columbus recorded its first deadly shooting of 2018.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, at about 11:22pm, Sunday, officers were called to the 4000 block of Yukon Avenue on the report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found Ashley Marie Newman, 30, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Her husband, Sean Newman, had fled the scene.

A relative told police that Sean Newman had called to say that he accidentally shot Ashley and was now threatening to kill himself.

Ashley Newman was taken to Grant Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 12:14am.

Police say Sean M. Newman, 32, had left the scene. He was arrested a short time later on I-270 near Alum Creek after he intentionally crashed his vehicle.

Neighbor Dale Robinson says the couple, who have a young daughter, never showed any signs of trouble. “I don’t understand it at all,” Robinson said. “I though they got along fabulous. From everything I’ve seen since they’ve been there – never a problem. I never heard him raise his voice at her.”

Police continue to investigate.
