Columbus Police identify victim of north side shooting

Columbus police have identified the victim of a shooting that occurred Wednesday night on the city’s north side.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, at about 11:44pm, Wednesday, officers were called to the 1300 block of E. 26th Avenue on the report of a shooting. 

When officers arrived on scene, they found a 53-year-old man lying outside the rear of the residence suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

That man has been identified by Columbus Police as Willie James McKnight, 53, of Columbus.

Investigators report that another man, Paul Eli Rispress, 51, was also found outside the residence suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. He was taken to Grant Medical Center where he is expected to survive his injuries. 

Police say McKnight was armed and confronted Rispress, who also had access to a gun.

The two men exchanged gunfire, with both striking their intended targets, according to police. 

The shooting remains under investigation and police ask anyone with information to CPD Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
