Columbus man running Cap City in memory of his wife, who began weight loss journey with him

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Joe Heasley’s marathon journey started 2 1/2 years ago.

“April 2016 I ran my first Cap City,” said Heasley.

It was something that Joe and his wife Lisa always wanted to do, but Lisa was never able to cross that finish line.

“It was actually three days before the one year anniversary of my wife passing away from a heart attack,” said Heasley.

Joe and Lisa, Northland High School sweethearts, started their weight loss journey walking together. They completed their last walk together in 2014 to support Pancreatic Cancer Research.

“After she passed away I decided I need to do something to finish our journey that we had started together,” Heasley said.

In September 2015 Heasley signed up for his first Cap City Half Marathon. Tracking his journey on Facebook, he got unexpected help from an old high school friend.

“I sent him a note that said if you can do 8, you can do a half marathon,” said high school friend Jim Hartigan.

Hartigan traveled from Memphis to run with his first race with him. Now the duo has taken on 5 half-marathons and 2 marathons together. But for Joe, he runs for one purpose …his wife.

“She is with me every step,” said Heasley.
