COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A firefighter for the city of Columbus was killed in a motorcycle crash near downtown, yesterday.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, at about 9:38pm, Tuesday, Derek Walton was driving a 2014 Suzuki motorcycle on E. Long Street near N. 11th St. when he lost control of the bike.
The motorcycle fell on its side and slid towards the north side of Long St. where it struck a light pole and came to rest just west of Lester Drive.
A spokesperson with the Columbus Division of Fire confirms that Walton was a firefighter with the city.
Walton was taken to Grant Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
According to a Facebook post by CFD Walton joined the division June, 9, 2014 and was assigned to Station 23 at Livingston Avenue and Hamilton road because of his passion to work in that neighborhood.
“One of the things that stands out to me about Derek is that he was so excited about becoming a paramedic, he started his training on his own time at Grant Hospital instead of waiting for the next Columbus Fire class,” said Assistant Chief James Cannell. “He will be greatly missed.”
Walton grew up in Columbus and graduated from South High School Urban Academy in 2003. He served in the US Army from 2004-2007 and received an Honorable Discharge.
Police continue to investigate the crash.
