Charter school teacher facing child porn charges

Local News

Parents of a Columbus charter school on the east side are questioning the actions of a high school teacher after police say an inappropriate video of a minor was found on the teacher’s cellphone.

Lyle Pierce, a high school teacher at Columbus Arts and Technology, was arrested on Monday at the schools in the parking lot.

Pierce, 25, has been placed on administrative leave without pay following his arrest.

His cellphone was seized by police on April 24, according to Franklin County court documents.

Police say in court documents an obscene video of a minor was found.

The video was a recorded video chat session, police said.

In the video, investigators say a small window shows a man, who police believe to be Pierce performing a sex act.

A spokesperson with the sheriff’s office says authorities started to investigate Pierce in November when they received a tip that he was engaging in inappropriate acts with minors in and outside the state.

Columbus Arts and Technology Academy is a kindergarten through 12th-grade charter school with 550 students, according to the school’s website.

“Me and my wife was kind of worried when we got the letter and now some of my boys tell me they hear everybody talking about it,” said parent Ignacio Carrion.

Ignacio Carrion has three children who attend Columbus Arts and Technology Academy.

Carrion says after this recent situation and previous incidents at the school he and his wife are enrolling their boys in another school.

“Me and my wife think that it is a better a school for them and try to get them a better education,” said Carrion.

School administrators sent the following statement to parents and NBC 4:

“In accordance with the law, the school administration took action to suspend his employment. The school is currently awaiting results of police investigation and will continue to act in accordance with the law. At this time, investigators have indicated that pierce’s charges do not involve the school or its stakeholders.”

Investigators say no children at this school were involved in this incident.

Pierce is facing a felony charge of pandering obscene materials involving a minor.
