Catholic Diocese of Columbus release names of clergy credibly accused of abuse of a minor

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The Catholic Diocese of Columbus has released the list of names of clergy who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor.

According to the Catholic Diocese of Columbus’ website, “For purposes of this list, a credible allegation is one which, based upon a review of the available facts and circumstances, is more likely than not to be true.”

Carol Zamonski works with victims of sexual abuse by priests. She says the release of a list can trigger a wide range of emotions for victims.

“I think theyre getting wildly restimulated,” Zamonski said. “They’re upset, they’re probably getting angry, they’re probably getting sad. They’re probably wishing that the diocese would deal them as credible people. Not all of them have been dealt with that way.”

Zamonski says for victims whose abuser’s name had not previously been made public, the release of the list can be cathartic. “That would make someone feel really good and it really ups the possibility that someone else might report a crime done by the same perpetrator,” Zamonski said. “They might find other people who were abused by the same abuser and that’s very validating to survivors.”

Zamonski, who works with the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), says the list released Friday is missing some critical information about the abusers. “Where are they now if they’re still alive and do their local authorities know that they’re a sexual abuser, noted sexual abusers – that column is missing.”

The list is as follows:

The website states:

Factors considered in making this determination included the details provided by the accuser; corroborating evidence; sincerity, circumstances, and reputation of the accuser and the accused; the accused clergy’s history (including any previous difficulties, suspicions or, in the case of previously accused clergy, allegations); and, if applicable, the accused’s admission of wrongdoing.  No one factor was determinative; but rather a totality of the circumstances was considered.  Since the establishment of the Review Board in 2003, the determination of credibility is made in consultation with the Review Board in all cases of incardinated clergy accused of sexual abuse of a minor while the clergy is still living and not yet laicized (removed from the clergy state).
