Many familiar faces could be seen at our Firefighters for Kids Toy Drive on Saturday and that included our Buckeye!
Not only was it a huge day for NBC 4 but also for Buckeye. as the day marked his first public appearance!
“He’s excited to be out getting to meet all the viewers. People have had the opportunity to watch him from the time he was born on the live cam all the way up to now,” Molly Schulz from Canine Companions said.
Buckeye is 6 months old and Canine Companions tells us he’s been working really hard on his basic commands.
“He’s got those commands down well enough that it was time for him to come out and meet all of his fans,” says Shultz.
Buckeye has a new puppy cape, which he will wear until he’s a year and a half old. Afterward, he should get his blue service dog vest.
He also has a new piece of equipment used at public appearances.
“It’s called a gentle leader. All this is is it’s just a little piece of fabric that goes around his nose so he can’t pull. It’s a positive reinforcement tool that we use on our puppies.”
Buckeye is continually being trained daily to be a service dog with Canine Companions for independence.
“So he’s going to go on to serve an adult, a child or veteran with a disability if he becomes a fully trained service dog. So, he’s working right now on that journey to get there. He needs 30 commands down and be good in public,” Schultz said.
Schulz adds Saturday was such a great day to take Buckeye out in the public with people and sounds.
Buckeye will also take his first flight soon.
“He is going to the Rose Bowl.
He is going to California for Christmas vacation and will go to the Rose Bowl while he’s there to cheer on his home team.
He loves everyone he’s met and he really is a very social dog so the more people that he gets to meet the happier he is.”
Buckeye will be leaving for California just before Christmas and he will be at the Rose Bowl making his second public appearance!
