COLUMBUS (WCMH) – Organizers in the LGBTQ community along with Progress Ohio are planning to welcome Vice President Mike Pence to Columbus with a dance party later on this week.
Vice President Pence will be joining America First Policies for an event at the Renaissance Columbus Downtown on Friday, which is also the first day of the Columbus Pride Festival.
Already over 340 people have RSPV’d on Facebook saying they’re coming to the Big LGBTQ Dance Party.
“I want this entire street over here filled with rainbow and dancing,” said volunteer organizer Jay Smith. “That is what I’m hoping to see.”
Organizers and performers said they want to welcome the vice president to Columbus in a positive way.
“He’s not coming to us, so we need to come to him…showing we’re Americans just like everyone else and we want equal, fair treatment,” said performer Kelly Coate.
They plan on greeting the vice president outside the hotel he’s speaking on Friday with a celebration of Pride.
“We also kind of want to counter that anti-LGBT attitude that they have with a big, positive, loving dance party,” said Smith.
He said they already have a DJ lined up to perform, as well as several drag queens including Coate.
“I like to bring some glamour, but mostly comedy with a message,” said Coate. “It’s a positive, calm approach to make our presence.”
Smith said he wants people to be aware of Vice President Pence’s record on LGBTQ issues.
“He wanted to ban same-sex marriage,” he said. “He wanted to not just maintain the don’t ask don’t tell policy he wanted to repeal that and not allow any gay, lesbian or transgender service members.”
But, Smith also wants them to walk away knowing that Columbus has a supportive community.
“We want to show that the administration might not have your back, but we do and we are fighting for you every day and we love you and we support you,” he said.
The dance party will go from 2pm-5pm on Friday.
