PEEBLES, OH (WCMH) — Peebles High School student-athletes Kierra Stone and Jacey Justice will never forget about the plane crash May 18.
The girls were competing in an OHSAA district track meet at Southeastern High School in Chillicothe when a single-engine plane came towards them and crashed in a nearby wooded area.
Stone’s description of the crash is quite telling.
“It’s one of those things you’re just like, did that just happen,” said Stone. “I saw it and I just kind of stood there. I froze.”
Stone said she believes that the pilot purposely veered away from the track in order to save lives.
“I think it was very heroic for him to do that,” said Stone.
Stone’s friend and teammate Jacey Justice explained what she experienced. “It looked like it was coming near us and the next thing you know it just curves off and it goes toward the words and just goes down.”
Justice reflected on the fortune of the athletes and volunteers at the track meet.
“It makes you realize how lucky you are, because if it would’ve hit us who knows if we all would’ve been here right now,” said Justice.
After the race, the girls’ teammates and competitors joined in a circle, held hands, and prayed for the pilot.
“I just wake up every day and be thankful that you’re there,” said Justice. “You never know when it’s going to be your last day.”
