Alligator found swimming in Lake Michigan

Local News

WAUKEGAN, IL (WCMH) – Well, this isn’t something you see every day.

Officials in Waukegan, Illinois received a report Monday morning of an alligator swimming in Lake Michigan. The city said a resident followed up and sent video of the four-foot gator slowly swimming in the lake.

The man who spotted the gator, David Castaneda, told the Chicago Tribune he had been paddling for about four hours when he spotted the gator. He originally thought it was a dead salmon.

When he took a closer look, he was shocked to find the truth.

“I went closer to see if it was real,” he said. “I was just in shock. I wasn’t sure if it was a real alligator or a toy.”

Animal control officers managed to recover the alligator. Officials said whoever released the gator into the lake had also taped its mouth shut.

The animal was taken to a wildlife center nearby.
