20 dogs rescued from suspected dog-fighting ring

Local News

Twenty-one dogs were rescued and a 34-year-old man was arrested on drug and dog-fighting charges on Thursday after the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office raided a home on Columbus’ west side.

German Sanchez, 34, was arrested at his home in the 700 block of Dexter Avenue.

Marc Gofstein, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said a total of 20 dogs were confiscated.

“…13 of which were mature Pit Bulls, one Yorkshire Terrier, six puppies and then there was one additional puppy that was already dead,” Gofstein said.

Gofstein said during the course of an investigation into narcotics trafficking, it was discovered that Sanchez was well known in dog fighting circles.

Animal control agents from Columbus Humane were on site to take custody of the dogs.

“To be able to get all of these dogs away from a horrible situation is a good days work,” Gofstein said.

Sanchez was charged with one count of dog fighting and one count of possession of crack cocaine.
