The Columbus Division of Police says a man armed with a gun and threatening to kill himself died Wednesday after shots were fired during a confrontation with officers responding to his home in Franklinton.
Officers were called to the home on South Yale Ave on a report of a man with a gun who was distraught and possibly suicidal.
Police say the officers found a 52-year-old man inside with a gun.
Multiple shots were fired but police would not say whether Heeter fired his weapon. Heeter died shortly after he was transported to Grant Medical Center.
Sgt. Chantay Boxill says officers have to rely on their training in such situations. “You’re sensitive to people who have mental distress in their lives but you also know from our training that…a person who is suicidal can also become homicidal,” Boxill said.
The incident remains under investigation by the Critical Incident Response Team.
No one else was hurt.
Officials say a gun was recovered at the scene.
