Over the past few months, the Columbus Division of Police Vice Unit has received a lot of attention.
The FBI's Public Corruption Task Force is taking over the investigation at the request of CPD. CPD said "evidence has developed," had asked the federal agency to investigate.
The Task Force includes the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and Ohio Auditor.
CPD has also relieved VICE officer Andrew Mitchell of duty. In August, during an undercover prostitution sting, Mitchell shot and killed 23-year-old Donna Castleberry. Police said Mitchell fired several shots after Castleberry pulled a knife and stabbed Mitchell in the hand.
CPD says Mitchell was not relieved of duty because of the shooting.
NBC 4 Investigator Tom Sussi shows us how we reached this point in which the FBI has been called in to investigate.
- July 12: CPD VICE arrested adult film star Stormy Daniels during an appearance at Siren's Gentlemen's Club. Three undercover cops accused Daniels of touching them. All charges were dropped.
- August 23: A CPD VICE cop hot and killed 23-year-old Donna Castleberry during an undercover prostitution sting. Police said Mitchell fired several shots after Castleberry pulled a knife and stabbed him in the hand.
- September 2: A man who works in the adult entertainment industry delivered a large packet of information to several city officials including the Mayor's Office and Chief of Police. Allegations - serious ones - regarding some of the unit's officers.
- September 6: Chief Jacobs calls a press conference, informing the media that the VICE unit has been placed under a four-week review.
Vice unit operations remain paused during the investigation. CPD will notify the public before operations resume.
