With tax deadline approaching, Lee Brown of Grove City would like to have his tax returns complete. His 2014 returns. that is.
Based on a recommendation of a bookkeeper, Brown gave his taxes to Don Wood Book Keeping of Grove City in the spring of 2015. While he waiting for his returns, he also dropped off his 2015 and 2016 taxes.
Deadlines came and went and still no completed returns for Brown. He says he made countless attempts to contact Wood without luck.
He contacted Better Call Jackson to help out. We too were unsuccessful in meeting with Mr. Wood, but we did speak with him by telephone.
He said Mr. Brown gave him information on a corrupted file. Brown has a different story.
“I went back into the email and this I provided a copy of this to everybody the information he requested was hand typed out, so it was in the body of an email,” said Brown.
I asked Brown why would he drop off additional tax work when the first returns are not complete.
‘He told me to trust him and that everything will be done and here we are another whole year later, nothing has been done. So, shame on me I guess. But when a guy is sincere and gives you his word, the way I was brought up, a man’s word is as good as his handshake, obviously, it’s not,” said Brown.
Brown filed a police report and contacted the Better Business Bureau and the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
Better Call Jackson has learned that in addition to Brown, others have filed complaints against Don Wood Book Keeping. Since our original report, Grove City Police has given Wood a summons to appear in court, charged with unauthorized use of property, which is a 4th-degree misdemeanor.
Brown is concerned the IRS will come after him for delayed filings, but he hopes his documentation and records will show he was in good faith and at the mercy of the person who is supposed to file the taxes.
The state agency that regulates certified public accountants explained that you should only take your personal information to a licensed CPA. In the case of Mr. Brown, he took his information to a book keeper and that is not the same.
