The upcoming crisp Ohio evenings will draw a lot of people to the warm glow of an open fire.
In addition to comfort, a fire can be therapeutic. But, don’t get burned when buying firewood.
First of all, understand definitions. When you purchase a ‘bundle,’ that is not a measured amount. A cord of wood is defined as the amount of wood that fills a 128 cubic foot space, or an 8x4x4 foot stack.
Since firewood is irregularly shaped, a cord of wood typically averages about 85 cubic feet of wood.
If someone offers to deliver the wood, make sure it’s stacked and measured before you pay. You can also call around to get an idea of local prices.
If you have an issue with a measurement of wood, call the Franklin County Auditor’s Office at 614-525-4663. The Office of Weights and Measures is the same agency that monitors area gas pumps to make sure they are accurate.
