Oil change leads to instant headaches for local car owner

Better Call 4

Don Corbett of Reynoldsburg likes to save time just like all of us, so when he found out it would be a few weeks before he could schedule his BMW for an oil change, he decided to use the Valvoline Instant Oil Change from Hilliard.

Not long after the oil change, he says his wife started having issues with his car. ‘the following Monday and the car overheated on her and the computers inside tells you all the stuff making a terrible sound like something was getting ready to break so it was almost immediately,” says Corbett

Corbett says he made numerous calls to the Valvoline Instant Oil Change facility but wasn’t getting any results. He was told they were not responsible for the issues he was having with his car.

Corbett then took his car to a certified BMW technician.

“When we got there, the technician asked, who changed the oil? because oil was all over the valve covers and over an ECG sensor,’ said Corbett.

Better Call Jackson contacted the corporate communications representative from Valvoline, Heather Watson, who launched a re-investigation.

One week later, Better Call Jackson received this response from Valvoline which reads in part:

After reviewing, our ops team and the dealership technician back out service manager’s initial finding that the car’s sensor failed because of a gasket, not the oil change service. When the vehicle’s eccentric shaft sensor failed that allowed oil from inside the engine to penetrate the sensor and cause the car trouble.

We found something we missed in our service center manager’s initial fact-finding; we allowed his vehicle to leave our service center two quarts low on coolant.  When the eccentric shaft sensor failed less than 200 miles after we did his oil change, he believed-as most people would have that the one caused the other. Mr. Corbett’s trust in VIOC overrides our technical findings-and anything else. We want to make this right for him and cover the cost he incurred for this repair.

Ms. Watson goes on to say;

In full transparency, we believe we would have come to the same decision based on the facts we have now, whether Mr. Corbett had reached out directly to our ops leadership team or NBC4 to escalate his claim. We’re grateful to have the opportunity to preserve his relationship with us and do what’s right.

The following week, Don Corbett received a check for $1,665.00.

Always keep your records on any service that’s completed on your car. Most of the oil change facilities have cameras positioned throughout the service area to monitor what happens to your vehicle.
