School’s out for summer, so it’s time to celebrate!
If you don’t want your kids just lounging around the house this weekend, don’t worry — there are a ton of free things to do this weekend that are fun for the whole family.
Art, music, performances, food trucks … what more could you ask for? The Columbus Arts Festival takes over the Scioto Mile this weekend and there’s a ton of fun stuff for kids to do, including hands-on art activities, the Children’s Gallery, the Grass Patch Theatre, COSI Art Camp, and meeting the Art Shark. If you have older kids that are into theater, be sure to check out the Actors’ Theatre of Columbus’ performance of Macbeth. The show starts at 8pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Watch the talented actors from right here in central Ohio bring one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays to life in Schiller Park.
Now in its eighth year, the Gateway Film Center’s summer family film series will be showing Little Women all weekend long. Admission is free with a library card. Click or tap here for show times.
There’s all sorts of fun going on Friday from 10am to 1pm at the Columbus Commons. Bring your kids to take a ride on the carousel or try out the bounce houses completely free of charge. There will be performances, the Imagination Playground, crats and games. Plus, if the weather cooperates, there will be an inflatable water slide!
Check out free live music at the Franklinton Fridays Concert Series. Counterfeit Madison and Montezuma will be performing beginning at 7pm.
Head over to the Topiary Park downtown to hear the musical stylings of the Caribbean Jazz Quintet on Saturday! This one-hour free concert is designed to introduce jazz and American music to young children in their families and feature some of Columbus’ finest musicians and ensembles. If you’re in the Newark area or are up for a day trip, stop by the grand opening of the SciDome Planetarium at The Works! The grand opening will have a members-only reception from 9am to noon and the general public can join in the celebration from noon until 5pm. This event is free with admission to The Works.
If the Arts Festival has you excited about art, make sure to visit the Columbus Museum of Art on Sunday. Admission is free every Sunday and there are a ton of fun things for kids to do, including playing in the Wonder Room, building a puzzle together in a gallery and checking out the Walter Wing.
