MARION, OH (WCMH) — Firefighters are battling a massive scrap metal fire at Sims Brothers Recycling in Marion.

Firefighters from both Marion Township and Marion City fire are on scene, and tell NBC4 they expect to have the fire contained by 4pm. Chief Ben Meddles says firefighters had to lay 1,800 feet of hose to get enough water on the fire.

The Ohio EPA has a crew on the way to Marion to monitor the smoke billowing out of the fire. The Marion City Fire Department says much of the fire is paint burning off the metal, and the fire may contain toxins. The CEO of Sims Brothers tells NBC4 that the fire may contain magnesium dust.

Anyone downwind of the fire with breathing problems is asked to shelter in place.

The fire has Barks Road closed between Delaware Avenue and SR 4. SR 4 is also closed between Barks Road and Thew Ave.
