An Athens County man is behind bars after he allegedly beat his former employer with a baseball bat, authorities say.

According to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to Cullision Scrap Metal Yard at 10837 Salem Road in Athens on the report of an assault on Saturday. When deputies arrived, they spoke with the owner of the scrapyard. He told investigators he entered his home to find a male suspect inside with a baseball bat.

The suspect hit the victim several times with the bat. The victim was able to exit the home and call for help, but the suspect fled the scene before help arrived. After interviewing the victim and an employee of the scrapyard, deputies located the suspect, identified as Daniel Platt, 42, at his Millfield home. He was arrested without incident and transported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

“Deputies obtained statement from the victim and an employee on scene,” Sheriff Rodney Smith said in a statement. “It was determined that this incident was the result of the suspect being fired by the owner on May 18.”

Platt is charged with felonious assault. Platt was arraigned in Athens County Municipal Court on Tuesday, where a judge set his bond at $100,000. Platt’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 4.
