COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — This weeks’ Crime of the Week focuses on an unsolved homicide that happened in east Columbus in the fall of 2017, and a cash reward could be yours if you have information that helps investigators find the person responsible.
Around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, Columbus police officers were dispatched to the area of East Fifth Avenue and the ramp to James Road on a report of shots fired. A tip from a passerby that a man was lying partially in the street led officers to find 42-year-old Ulrich M. Smith, who was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Smith was taken by Columbus Division of Fire medics to Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Investigators say Smith appeared to be walking home from a COTA bus stop when he was shot. Smith left behind a wife and son. His death was the 100th homicide in the City of Columbus in 2017.
Central Ohio Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information leading to the arrest or indictment of the person(s) responsible for Smith’s murder. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS(8477).
