Police say they shot and killed a man who ambushed officers and opened fire on them when they responded to a domestic call in Clearwater early Wednesday morning.

Clearwater police responded to an apartment at 1444 Gulf To Bay Blvd. after a woman made a post on Facebook that asked for someone to check on her at an apartment behind a shopping strip. The woman said a man was beating her up and had a gun.

Officers arrived at the apartment with guns drawn, but said the woman asked them to put their guns away.

Investigators said that’s when the suspect ambushed officers by shooting at them from behind the woman.

Police say the man fire multiple rounds. One officer was hit struck in the boot.

The man took off to Gulf to Bay Boulevard where he started shooting at the officers again. Officers fired back and the man was shot and killed at the scene.

The officer who was hit in the boot by a bullet was treated at the scene.

At least 5-10 officers responded to the scene. It is not clear how many of them fired their weapons.

Officers are trying to figure out if another person was involved in the shooting and are searching the area.

The woman who posted for help took off during the shooting is nowhere to be found.

The officer who was hit in the boot was not the officer who shot and killed the suspect, police say.

The identity of the man who was shot and killed has not been released.

One man has been taken into custody for questioning. Officers say the man was running from the scene as they were responding to the shooting suspect in the middle of the road
