AUSTIN (KXAN) — New renderings of how an empty lot in north Austin could be transformed into a Major League Soccer stadium were released Thursday morning.
Precourt Sports Ventures, the group wanting to move Columbus Crew to Austin, hired Gensler, TBC and CAA ICON to provide mockups of what the stadium could look like at McKalla Place including an interior view.
Jonathan Emmett, the principal and design director of the Gensler Sports Practice, says the designs draw from Austin’s “vibrant local culture.” European venues also had an influence on the designs. The stadium will also be built to provide ample shade.
When not in use for soccer games, the team’s owner wants the venue to be accessible for its landscaped spaces and trails.
Earlier this month, Precourt Sports Ventures released a conceptual site plan showing three parking areas that will also be built along with an outdoor music and performance area.
City staff is expected to provide the Austin City Council with a detailed analysis of the viability of an MLS stadium and team by June.
