Sally the orangutan dies at the Columbus Zoo

POWELL, OH (WCMH) -- The orangutan died Saturday while receiving treatment for pneumonia.

According to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Sally lived passed the median life expectancy of Sumatran orangutan in a North American zoo, 28, by six years. She was 34 years old.

The zoo says Sally suffered from a chronic respiratory disease that made her more susceptible to pneumonia and in the recent years, she had been treated several times.

Sally originally came to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in 2006 from the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, and her animal care team described her as a "sassy princess" with a feisty personality.

With less than 15,000 in their native habitat the Sumatran orangutan is considered a critically endangered species, according to the zoo.
