Opa! National Gyro Day is Friday, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by chowing down on the best gyros the Columbus area has to offer.
I asked NBC4 viewers what their favorite locally owned restaurants to get their gyro fix are, and here’s what they said:
Boasting some of the best Greek food in town, Yanni’s takes the top spot for gyros among NBC4 viewers. The small, unassuming north Columbus eatery regularly draws enough of a crowd that people are lined up just to get inside. Their generously sized gyros are perfectly seasoned, nestled in a deliciously soft pita and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and their specialty house-made dressing. Make sure to save room for dessert because their traditional baklava is some of the best around. If you’re planning on stopping by on a Friday or Saturday night, try to come early to avoid the wait. Bonus: Yanni’s delivers through Doordash.
Even though No. 1 Gyro Shoppe is coming in at No. 2 among NBC4 viewers, their gyros still live up to the hype. Part of the Columbus-based Greek Express restaurant family, both No. 1 Gyro Shoppe locations stack up to the competition with NBC4 viewers. Even their small gyros are huge, and a regular-sized gyro is more than enough to share. Their tzatziki sauce also helps this restaurant stand out from the rest because it’s a little heavier on the dill than sauces at other places.
If you’re in the Whitehall area, you can’t go wrong with a visit to King Gyros. They have some of the best lamb gyros around, and they definitely don’t skimp on the meat. Their delicious gyros, French fries and desserts all come in at a reasonable price point that will have you saying “Opa!” in no time.
Specializing in Middle Eastern cuisine, Nazareth Deli has been serving Columbus for more than 20 years. The meat in the gyros is perfectly seasoned and mouth-wateringly tender. If you prefer a more Americanized version of a gyro, you can’t go wrong with Rachel’s Gyro.
Located in Delaware (and with more Columbus-area locations coming soon), Freddy’s Street Food is one of the best Mediterranean eateries around, and their gyros are no exception. Filled with your choice of grill items (gyro meat, grilled or fried chicken, steak, falafel, calamari and even a vegetarian option), topped with house-made sauce, fresh veggies and cheese, this is one gyro you won’t want to put down. Plus, if for some reason you aren’t satisfied with your meal, the restaurant will often replace your food for free at your convenience. Pro-tip: Go ahead and upgrade to a combo, because Freddy’s also has the best french fries around, according to NBC4 viewers.
