The “This Is Us”  Season 3 premiere did not disappoint — at least for those of us who are diehard fans.

The first show of the new season begins with the 38th birthday of Randall, Kevin and Kate, and finds each of them at a pivotal point.

Randall trying to connect with the foster daughter he hopes to adopt.  Kevin is about to premiere his movie and is beginning a relationship with Beth’s cousin. Kate and Toby hope for medical help to begin the family each of them desperately want. (So much so that Toby flushes away his anti-depressants to ensure a boost in his sperm count.)

Importantly, the show also is taking us back to the beginning of Jack and Rebecca’s relationship, and teasing a look ahead at Randall and his eldest daughter ominously planning to visit an unidentified “her.”

Actress Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate, hinted in a recent interview that Kate’s dream of motherhood will be an important storyline this year.

“Kate wanted to be a mom. I think that’s something that’s she’s always wanted. And part of it really is that she wanted to hold onto any piece of Jack and sort of have him live on forever. Personally, I think being a mom is one of the most selfless, most wonderful things you can ever do. And we see that through Rebecca and her giving up her dreams and following her kids,” Metz said.

After being told her weight might keep her from motherhood, Kate has a meltdown at her own birthday brunch.

A frustrated Kate says: “I’m so tired. I’m so tired. I’m smiling and pretending that it’s sunny out. When is the universe going to give me a damn break.”

Metz says she can relate.

“That monologue for me was really intense, especially sitting around a birthday party and your friends are like what the hell just happened. But she had to … ,” Metz said.

Kate and Toby’s struggles with fertility are highlighted on the same night that Randall’s family is examining adoption and Stacia is coming to terms with the abandonment of her birth father.

“This is Us” promises to go in so many directions this season, for the Big Three in the current day, for Jack and Rebecca in the past, and apparently Randall in the future.  And the rest of us can’t wait to go along for the ride.
