Joe Nugent

Joe Nugent became NBC4’s Sports Director in July 2023.

The move to Columbus represented a return home after living in Dublin as a kid. It was back in the ’80s when he first saw an Ohio State game at the ‘Shoe, met legendary WCMH sportscaster Jimmy Crum, met Bobby Rahal, attended the Memorial Tournament and watched the Clippers play at Cooper Stadium.

Joe came to NBC4 after covering Big Ten sports as Sports Director at WOWT-TV in Omaha, Nebraska. He also worked at WTVG-TV Toledo, WTOL-TV Toledo and in radio at WWWM-FM Toledo. He’s won several regional Emmy and AP awards in his career. Nugent graduated from Bowling Green State University.

His most memorable stories include covering 13 straight Ohio State-Michigan games (2007-19), the Cavaliers championship in the 2016 NBA Finals, the 2016 World Series, Nebraska-Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland, in 2022 and Creighton basketball in the NCAA Tournament.

Joe in some way, shape or form does something sports-related every day. It might be covering an athlete/team/game, exercising, watching a game or reading a story. There are also days where all of that happens. Like many, sports are a passion for Joe. He also enjoys exploring new places, traveling and helping people out.
