Two April rainfall records set in 1st half of the month

Two top-6 wettest April days this year

COLUMBUS (WCMH) - So far it has been a very interesting start to the month of April.  Today for the 3rd straight Monday we have ticked some snowfall outside.

Also, this is on the heels of the wettest day of the month on Sunday in which we filled the buckets with 2.06" of rainfall.  While this does not seem like a lot, it was just 12 days earlier when we dropped 1.95" of rainfall for our 1st daily record of the month, Sunday was the 2nd.

While this may not seem like a huge deal, consider this, April on average is our 4th wettest month of the year.  It totals 3.4" on average for the ENTIRE MONTH.  We picked up more than half of that on two separate days already.

As of today we have 4.55" of rain and melted snowfall so far.  That puts us 2.75" above normal for the month through April 16th.

If we stayed dry the entire rest of the month, we would still finish 1.15" above normal for the month.  Right now we stand at the 24th wettest April on record, and we still have 14 days left!

Record daily rainfall has been a theme in April

Historically speaking, since 1878 when records were being kept (1879 for April) we have recorded 2 of our top 6 wettest days ever this month so far.

  1. 2.30"  4-19-1940
  2. 2.26"  4-7-1895
  3. 2.23"  4-16-1998
  4. 2.06"  4-15-2018
  5. 2.03"  4-30-1983
  6. 1.95"  4-3-2018

It does appear we are done with the big rainmakers potentially for the next two weeks.  That would still keep us on track for a top 20 wettest Aprils with just a few more showers in the forecast.

Remember the April showers will bring the May flowers...hopefully!
