Current OSU Band Members Speak Out For The First Time

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ohio - It has been nearly a week since Jonathan Waters was fired as director of The Ohio State University Marching Band.

Waters was terminated from his position following for a so-called “sexualized culture” within the band.

On Wednesday, for the very first time, a group of current band members of broke their silence regarding the current turmoil: losing their leader, and the future of the band.

John Joyce, a squad leader for the band says he was at work when he received the news about Waters. He says when he heard Waters had been fired, he couldn’t believe it.

“Couldn’t imagine why it would happen,” Joyce said.

Fellow band member, Kris Tikson, says she reacted strongly after reading the report.

“The words used in the report, sexualized culture, I took issue with. That’s not my experience in the band,” Tikson said.

Others say the firing still doesn’t feel real.

“I still have a hard time believing it, feel I will get to first rehearsal and Jon will be there,” Aroh Pandit said.

The group of students NBC4 spoke with says Waters was in the process of fixing any problems the band had.

"[There were} Heated discussions at squad meetings. ‘Do we need to do this? Are we past this?’ There was a vote, and if the vote didn't agree with [Waters], he would say, I cant agree with the majority. We have to end this," said Joyce.

One of those discussions surrounded around the tradition of the midnight ramp, which involved playing into the stadium in underwear or less.

Joyce says the director staff told the squad leaders that tradition needed to end.

The group of band members told NBC4 they believe the band is the university’s soul. Despite the absence of their leader, they will continue on.

"We will march down that ramp harder than ever before, and play Scrip Ohio a little louder this time," said Pandit.

Board of Governors of the TBDBITL Alumni Club released a statement on Wednesday that says the board is conducting its own investigation. The statement claims Waters was not afforded due process.
