Reaction To OSU Band Director's Termination Mostly Negative

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Former band members are rallying around Jon Waters.

His attorney, David Axelrod, tells NBC4 Waters knows he has support and he will be doing everything he can to clear his name.

”Absolutely they're making a mistake I think it's short sighted,” said John Mercurio, a former band member. “While I respect President Drake and the new people he's brought in with him I don't think they completely understand the traditions of the band."

He was a snare drummer from 1979 to 1983. Now, he raises funds for the band.

Mercurio says he understands that some of what is detailed in the report looks very bad. On NBC4’s Facebook page, not all commenters were sympathetic stating the hazing had gone too far or that these allegations were “par for the course.”

"It's a different world that we live in today than when other guys and ladies before me were in the band,” Mericurio said. “Things that were accepted as norms back then -- much like Woody Hayes would not be accepted today, the same is true for the band."

Mericurio says Waters was not director when many of these “traditions” were started.

"That stuff's been going on for years almost since, my memory since the band was created."

The university cited Waters had not done enough to end the “traditions” when they terminated him Thursday morning.
