Former Ohio State Band Member Defends Fired Director Waters

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Members of The Ohio State University Marching Band are coming to the defense of director Jon Waters, who was fired amid allegations of a "sexualized culture" within the band.

NBC4's Mike Bowersock spoke to former band members, who used terms like knee-jerk reaction and mistake, and said the band will become very mediocre without Waters.

Former band member John Mercurio was a member from 1979 to 1983, and has since been a fundraiser for the band.

He spoke to NBC4 about some of the sexually explicit nicknames that were given to band members.

"The things we're laughing about it, and we're also, you know, maybe debating a little bit on -- the crossing the line -- you know, are these things that are worthy of a director, arguably the most popular and best director in the country, losing his job? I say no. I say it's a knee-jerk reaction from what's becoming a very PC-driven administration at my alma mater. And I'm ashamed of that, because it's going to demean the band. They have lessened the band with that decision," Mercurio said.

He said some of the secret traditions outlined in the report have gone on for decades.
