Columbus Named Among Fastest Growing Cities In Nation

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus is blowing away the competition in Ohio, being named the fastest growing big city in the state – and one of the fastest in the country.

The top five cities for growth are some of the biggest in the country: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Philadelphia.

In Ohio, Columbus has grown more than 4 percent in the last three years, as Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Toledo, and Youngstown have all lost population.

NBC4's Marcus Thorpe talked to Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman Thursday regarding Columbus' success.

NBC4: "This is great news for Columbus, isn't it?"

Coleman: "822,000 people in the city of Columbus. We're growing and we're the fastest growing city in the Midwest."

NBC4: "What decisions over the last couple of years do you think has really molded and shaped where we got to based on the census numbers?"

Coleman: "I think it's a multitude of things. It ranges from making a decision on the income tax that we had that could've devastated our city in many ways. I think it's our effort in our neighborhoods to help build them up, make them stronger. We have very high level quality services in our city. And people get that and understand it. So they come here to live. They come here to work. And they come here to raise a family from all over the nation."

NBC4: "Do you anticipate calls, maybe you already you get these, but from other cities that have maybe had a difficult time, calling you and saying, 'What's the secret sauce here?' Do they lean on you for any information?"

Coleman: "Actually, I do get a lot of calls from around the country, from other communities and they ask me what do we do."

NBC4: "You have your eye pretty much on not just what we're doing now, but what's happening, five, ten years down the road, right?

Coleman: "Here's what I say. And I say it all the time. The city that stays the same falls behind. So if you're satisfied with where you are, very soon you'll begin to fall behind. People are moving here and they're moving here because of all the wonderful things we have to offer as a community. So business leader, move your company to the city of Columbus. Expand your base in the city of Columbus. Increase your compensation in the city of Columbus."

Michael Dalby, president and CEO of the Columbus Chamber released the following statement Thursday:

"It's not surprising to see Columbus has been ranked as one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Our growth and success are a testament to many factors, including our diverse economic base, tremendous educational institutions, and an unprecedented spirit of public/private collaboration. We are home to a flourishing business community that provides jobs and opportunities. The nation and world are taking notice of what we’ve always known—Columbus is a great place to live, work and do business."
