POWELL, Ohio -

A 74-year-old man from Powell died after he fell into an icy pond while chasing after his dog Tuesday afternoon.

According to Powell police, 74-year-old Siegbert A. Allespach was walking his dog in Meadowview Park, along South Wooten Court, shortly before 4 p.m.

The dog got loose walked onto the ice over a pond. Allespach attempted to reach the dog, but fell through the ice.

Witnesses tell NBC4 Allespach struggled to keep his head above water, but slipped under just minutes before medics arrived.

After being in the water for 20 to 25 minutes, rescue crews were able to pull Allespach from the water. He was transported to Riverside Methodist Hospital where he later died.

Liberty Township Fire Chief Tim Jensen said aerators had recently been installed in the pond. The aerators bubble and prevent the water from completely freezing.

A neighbor said it was Allespach's dog that alerted her. The dog was barking and circling the ice where Allespach had fallen in.
