COLUMBUS, Ohio -
Ohio Gov. John Kasich is pushing legislators and the Ohio Department of Education to approve a one-time increase to the number of calamity days for local schools as a result of the recent wintry weather.

Kasich said that a one-time increase of a few days is needed because so many school districts have used or are close to using all of their five yearly calamity days.

"School closures can, of course, be an inconvenience but student safety always comes first.  Many schools have already hit the maximum number of snow days, or will soon, and if they exceed it and have to extend the school year it can wreak havoc with schools budgets and schedules.  Giving schools a few extra snow days this year will be helpful and let everyone stay focused on the top priority when weather hits, keeping kids safe," said Kasich.

Ohio law allows schools five "calamity" days a year before they must start adding days to the school year.  Kasich enacted legislation in 2011 increasing the number of calamity days from three to five.  This proposed increase would be for the current school year only.
The bill sponsors, State Representatives Tony Burkley (R-Payne) and Brian Hill (R-Zanesville) said it would allow four additional calamity days, bringing the total number of days to nine for the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year.
Mike Ditto, Ohio House of Representatives Majority Caucus spokesman said the typical bill process would include committee meeting before it might be introduced on the House floor. House lawmakers plan on holding a bipartisan caucus meeting on Tuesday and if the bill is voted on the House and Senate floors without change, it could be on the governor's desk within days.
