A 22-year-old man was shot and killed during an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the parking lot outside of a nightclub in northwest Columbus early Monday morning.

Witnesses on scene tell detectives two men were involved in a fight inside the club. One of the men involved in the dispute stated he was going to retrieve a gun from his car and return to the bar. The man went into the parking lot, retrieved a gun, and shot at an unidentified man as he was exiting the bar.

The two special duty officers were in the parking lot of the bar at the time of the shooting, according to Columbus police. The two officers witnessed the man with the gun and confronted him. The officers fired their weapons multiple times, striking the man.

Columbus medic personnel were called to the scene and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene at 2:12 a.m. The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Jonathan D. Rodgers.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Detectives say there were nearly 200 people in the club when the incident occurred. Witnesses were detained in police cruisers and questioned.

According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety Investigative Unit, there were some arrests of underage drinking and complaints of serving to those underage at the club's previous location on The Ohio State University campus.

Police runs to the new location include a call on Oct. 26 in which a man said his cousin was sprayed with Mace at the club.

Complaints regarding noise were called in on Nov. 17 and Nov. 23.

Another report included a man who was knocked out in a fight at the club on Nov. 25.

Columbus police said it's possible that they could set up a meeting with the club owners to discuss an action plan for safety.

"We reach out to the owners of these establishments to work with them, but if they are not willing to work with us, we will go ahead and shut them down," said Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner.

Police said they are not at that point with the club yet.

Detectives are searching for the man who was allegedly shot at by Rodgers. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to contact Columbus police homicide detectives at 614-645-4730.
